The Ruy López Opening

♔ Setup: Place all pieces in their starting positions. White on bottom.
King's pawn forward two squares. Control the center and open lines for your bishop and queen.
Black mirrors the move, also staking a claim in the center.
Develop your knight toward the center. It attacks Black's e5 pawn and prepares to castle.
Black defends the e5 pawn and develops a piece. A natural, principled response.
The Ruy López! Your bishop pins the knight that defends e5. One of the oldest and richest openings in chess.
